About the Wellington BRM
The Wellington British Railway Modellers society (WBRM) was incorporated in 1991, and is a welcoming society of around 40 members dedicated to British railway modelling. Our members range from complete beginners to experienced modellers, with a wide spread of skills and interests across the hobby.
We model in N, OO and O gauges, covering a variety of regions, eras and operating styles. Alongside a strong focus on building and operating high-quality layouts, the society offers a relaxed and social environment where knowledge is shared and ideas are encouraged.
Our aim is to foster and encourage railway modelling in Wellington and the surrounding areas, and we welcome anyone aged 16 and over with an interest in the hobby, whatever their level of skill. Reflecting the reach of the former Wellington Province, our membership draws from across the lower North Island.
What We Do
Build and Operate Layouts
Members work together on club layouts including our well-known “Wellington SALOP” 00 gauge layout. From track laying and wiring to scenery and detailing, there is always something underway.
Learn New Skills
Regular hands-on sessions and informal mentoring help members improve their modelling techniques. Whether it is electronics, scenery, weathering, or digital systems, knowledge is shared freely.
Exhibit and Connect
We attend and host model railway shows across the lower north island of New Zealand, showcasing our layouts and supporting the wider modelling community.
Frequently Asked Questions
A train set is an excellent introduction to railway modelling and can gradually be developed into a complete model railway. Visitors are welcome at our meetings on the third Sunday of each month, where members with a wide range of experience will be pleased to offer advice and answer questions. We also usually have at least one of our layouts operating.
Model railway exhibitions are held throughout the Wellington region during the year and provide another good opportunity to discover what the hobby has to offer. One of the largest is RailEx, held each November, featuring more than 20 layouts as well as modelling demonstrations and traders selling a broad selection of railway modelling products.
New members are always welcome, regardless of their experience or particular interests. Our membership includes railway modellers from across the Wellington region.
You can apply through the simple online process on our Join Us page. If you would prefer to meet us before joining, come along to one of our third-Sunday meetings at Waterloo Station.
Membership is open to anyone aged 16 or over and we have an active group of younger members who meet at the clubrooms. Modellers under 16 cannot join independently but may take part when accompanied and sponsored by an adult member.
We do not purchase collections or provide formal valuations. Selling locomotives, rolling stock, buildings and books separately will generally achieve the best return. Trade Me and eBay can help items reach their market value, although identifying, listing, packing and posting everything can require considerable time and effort.
Businesses and private buyers advertising in railway modelling magazines may purchase an entire collection. This is usually the quickest and easiest option, although the amount offered may be considerably lower than could be achieved by selling the items individually.
We may also be able to sell suitable items through our online and exhibition shop on a commission basis, with payment made once they have sold. Please use our Contact Us form to discuss this with us. If you would instead like to donate the collection to Wellington British Railway Modellers, we will ensure that the items are put to good use or find an appreciative new home.
Once you have joined, we can put you in touch with the leaders of our layout groups. The easiest way to get involved is to attend one of their working sessions and meet the team. New participants are welcome, whether they want to help construct, maintain or operate a layout.
Unfortunately, our clubrooms are not wheelchair accessible. They occupy the upper floor of Waterloo Station and can only be reached by stairs, as there is no lift.

The building is shared with the Potter’s House church, which occupies the floor below us. No other organisations currently use the Society’s clubroom facilities.
